The 3M™ Combat Arms Re-usable Earplugs (CAE) Version 4.1 are designed for insertion into the ear canal to help reduce exposure to hazardous noise including steady state and peak noise from weapons fire, for example.
This product features a special acoustical filter that lets lower level sound through with relatively little noise reduction for greater situational awareness, and provides increasing amount of peak noise reduction as sound levels increases above 110 dB. This is called the Open Mode.
When used in the Closed Mode the product acts as a conventional earplug offering protection against steady state and peak impulse noise; when we don't need to hear the environment and in continuous noise (e.g. in a helicopter, combat car, etc.).
The Open Mode is activated when the rocker switch featuring ‘CAE’ is pressed and the Closed Mode is activated when the rocker switch featuring ‘3M’ is pressed. The mode allows you to hear background sounds (including e.g. instructions, commands) and allows you to have a conversation, thus providing situational orientation. When impulse noise occurs, the built-in acoustic filter partially reduces the flowing sound wave and reduces the noise level. The open mode should be used when there is impulse noise (e.g. shots fired at an open range, firing range or battlefield) and there is a need to communicate with other people or generally to maintain situational awareness.
Subjective attenuation in accordance with EN352-2:2002:
- in the Closed Mode SNR = 28 dB
- in the Open Mode SNR = 16 dB
Open mode is activated by pressing the switch marked "CAE" and the switch marked "3M" is used to activate closed mode.
Combat Arms plugs do not require any power supply (no batteries) - the acoustic filter works on a mechanical principle.
The most important advantage of CAE 4.1 plugs is their "active" protection with their small size and weight - they fit easily in your pocket and are easy to carry and store. Additionally, when used in hot weather (e.g. by soldiers on missions) they do not cause sweating of ears and head.
