Walther P99 was created in response to the demand for German uniformed services for a cheap semi-automatic pistol caliber 9 mm. At the same time, he outclassed the P88, which was an expensive gun. The designers equipped the P99 with the "Anti Stress" system, which organic to a minimum, giving an accidental shot in a situation of high stress to which officers of uniformed services are subjected.

It is equipped with a bias impact mechanism, a double action trigger mechanism (single action / double action). The trigger force when firing from a previously tensioned striker is 20 newtons, and when firing from self-tension it is equal to 50 newtons. The trigger path is 14 mm (firing from the self-tensioner) and 5 mm (firing from a previously tensioned striker). P99 is equipped with a button for releasing the tight striker located on the upper surface of the lock in the rear part, behind the window of ejecting the scales. The ergonomic grip is equipped with replaceable linings that allow you to adjust the gun grip to the individual preferences of the user.

The Carl Walther WafFenfabrik company was founded in Zella-Mehlis over a hundred years ago. Walther pistols were mainly a civilian weapon, although a large amount of its most popular Model 4 was purchased by the German army during World War I. For military needs, even an enlarged version of Model 4, Model 6 was created, firing the prescribed 9x19 Parabellum cartridge. As it was still a free-acting weapon, the army was not happy with it and production soon ceased. After the war, the company was led by Carl's son Fritz Walther, who changed the company's offer profile, constructing a very successful and at that time ultramodern PP (Polizeipistole) pistol for a 7.65x17SR cartridge. At the end of the 1930s, P 38 was created, which introduced the first novelty in the field of locking since Browning - swinging bolt locking - and supplemented the classic Brownine catalog of return spring solutions (on, under and around the barrel) with a system of two parallel springs at the rear of the lock .

Before the war, the Walther factory produced the excellent Olimpia sports pistol, based on the PP design, for .22 Short and .22 LR cartridges. After the war, Olimpia returned briefly, but soon new GSP series sport, training and competition pistols appeared. From the utility weapon in 1969, new TPH (Taschenpistole mit Hahn) pistols for production entered the 6.35x15SR or .22 LR cartridge, replacing the pre-war WTP model. Shortened variants of P 38 were also produced - P 38k and P4 pistols, and in 1980 two new Walther police pistols appeared: P5, as well as its simplified version PP Super, a pistol operating on the principle of free recoil and firing a new cartridge 9 x18RB Ultra. P5 has no fuse, only a cock tensioning and releasing lever, which also serves as a latch latch, reducing the number of levers, levers and switches usually covering the entire left side of the gun skeleton to one universal. P5 was a good gun, but by no means could it meet the requirements of the American competition, so Walther created a gun for this competition, which was later put into production as P88.

For the first time, a large Walther pistol has a normal barrel locked by skewing, moved by a guide protrusion that inserts the cartridge chamber into the ejection window cutout, similar to the SIG-Sauer or Glock pistols. P88 also has a fuse lever equally available for left and right handed shooters, which was one of the conditions of the competition. As we know, the competition was won by Beretta, and only Walther remained on the civil market.
