SIG-Sauer P226 appeared in 1981 in connection with SIG Sauer joining the competition for a new United States Army service pistol. This is a developed version of the earlier SIG-Sauer P220 pistol, which differs from its predecessor mainly due to the enlarged magazine for 15 cartridges, an additional internal needle lock (protection against accidental firing). The gun operates on the principle of a short recoil of the barrel. Model SIG-Sauer P226 also has a magazine release that can be moved to the right side of the skeleton, making the gun easy to operate by both right and left-handed shooter.
SIG-Sauer P226 has gained excellent reviews in the world. It is used by many police units around the world. The pistol - despite losing (mainly because of the price) in the US Army service pistol competition - was approved by the United States Navy SEALs. In 1998, new versions P228 and P229 appeared, in the 9 mm caliber IMI, .357 SIG and .40SW. The first, with a 13-round magazine, in the last two cases the gun has a 12-round magazine and is slightly heavier (840 g).
